Slippery elm is also known as Indian elm, red elm, or gray elm. The tree gets its name from the slippery feeling of its inner bark. Only the inner bark of slippery elm, not the whole bark, is used as medicine. One of the most active ingredients in slippery elm is mucilage, which is what creates the pulp or “gruel” used in traditional medicine. The inner bark contains chemicals that can increase mucous secretion, which might be helpful for stomach and intestinal problems.

The mucilage found in its bark is ideal for soothing the digestive tract and eliminating inflammation, primarily the type that causes Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). There is also a significant amount of fibrous tissue found in the bark, which can help to bulk up the stool and eliminate issues like diarrhea. All in all, it is a full-service gastrointestinal cleaner and has been used as such for thousands of years.

Slippery elm has traditionally been used to calm sore throats, as the anti-inflammatory compounds of the bark can significantly reduce irritation in the throat. Can increase circulation, and thereby boost oxygenation of important parts of the body. Slippery Elm is that it is high in certain acids and coats the lining of the intestines; this means that gastrointestinal issues like ulcers can be remedied. The most valuable and diverse effects of slippery elm relate to its anti-inflammatory abilities, particularly for heartburn and hemorrhoids.

Directions: Pour 8-12 oz of boiling water over 1-2 tsp of herb. Cover and steep 5-10 min. Strain and serve.
