Latin/Botanical Name: Vitex Agnus-Castus
Also Known as: chaste tree, monk's berry, Chasteberris, vitex chaste tree seeds.
Chaste tree is a shrub that bears violet flowers and berries. It's also called vitex agnus-castus. The medicinal parts are the dried fruit and leaves.
The plant comes from the Mediterranean and western Asia. It can now be found in southeastern parts of North America.
Theophrastus mentioned the shrub several times, as agnos (άγνος) in Enquiry into Plants.
It has been long believed to be an anaphrodisiac but its effectiveness for such action remains unproven.
Chaste tree seeds contains iridoids, flavonoids, progestins.
This combination may help control menstrual cycles and ease menstrual pain. It may treat some endocrine problems.
The seeds have the ability to normalize the hormonal function of the reproductive organs.
Should be taken for a few months until its benefits become apparent.
Recommended Dosage and usage: To get to most out of the dried herb, you will have to prepare it as a tea. To use, add 1-2 teaspoon (3-5g) of the herb in to a tea infuser and boil it in water for 5 to 10 minutes. Add sweetening agents such as honey or stevia leaves accordingly.
